Frequently Asked Questions
What are the times of the school day?
The school day begins at 8:00am and ends at 3:00pm.
When and where should children report to school?
Students assemble in the school yard when the weather is good and report to their designated locations in the cafeteria when it is not. There are teachers on duty from 7:45am to 8:00am when students are escorted to class.
Are there before and aftercare arrangements?
Yes.  Before care runs from 7:00am-7:45am in the cafeteria.  Aftercare is from 3:15 pm-6:00 pm in the cafeteria.  There is a nominal fee charged for each service. Before care is $3.00 per day and after care is $5.00 per hour. Unlimited after care for one child is $200.00 per month and $300.00 for more than one child. Before care students may purchase breakfast and snack is provided for aftercare students.
Where do I drop off and pick up my child?
In the beginning of the year each family receives an identifying dashboard sign.  In the morning, parents should enter from 4 th Avenue, and follow the directions of the safeties. Students either join their class in the school yard or are sent to the cafeteria. In the afternoon parents may enter the schoolyard starting at 2:45pm from the 3 rd Avenue entrance and follow the directions of the safeties to a parking location.  Parents must go into the cafeteria to pick up their children.  This is for the safety of all.
Can my child buy lunch?
Yes.  St. Joseph the Carpenter School is serviced by Maschio’s Food Service which provides a nutritional breakfast and lunch at a nominal fee.  All food is cooked in house. Menus are published monthly. Maschio’s runs a nut free kitchen. Students may also bring a bagged lunch. Based on our state formulated contract agreement, no food from outside vendors can be allowed (i.e. Wendy’s, Burger King, McDonald’s, Subway etc).
How do I know what is happening in the school?
An newsletter is sent out weekly to all parents on Class Dojo with important current information.  If there is a reason, other announcements will be sent. We also post school events on the website and Facebook. Please check them regularly for calendar updates.
How will I know if the school needs to close for weather or other school emergency?
Information about weather or other school emergencies is shared through Class Dojo and via email.  In addition, the information will be placed on the website and Facebook.
Does St. Joseph’s follow the Common Core of the State of New Jersey?
The Archdiocese of Newark has its own rigorous, mapped curriculum that is formulated by our diocesan educators which refers to the Common Core but equals or supersedes in all subject areas. In addition, all Archdiocesan schools make use of the NWEA MAPS Testing forassessments in grades 2-8 and the COOP exam as the high school entrance exam.
