The Gifted and Talented program is designed to provide selected students with an opportunity to extend their learning beyond the traditional classroom experience. It is part of a broader commitment we have at Saint Joseph’s to ensuring that all of our children are appropriately challenged and supported according to their learning needs and styles.
Identification of the academically gifted student is based on academic aptitude, achievement, and attitude towards learning. Students are selected from grades 5 through 8 based on a combination of standardized test scores, classroom performance, and teacher nominations. Selected students meet for one period each week in a small group for supplemental instruction that will help them to further develop critical thinking and creative writing skills. Students will have opportunities to engage with diverse and increasingly complex texts as they generate thoughtful questions, debate big ideas, and draw connections across the curriculum.
